Changzhou Culture Plaza is located in the south of the People Square in Xinbei District, Changzhou, and it was completed in August 2020. The overall shape is inspired by the Jiangnan Arch Bridge, which consists of six small blocks that are turned in different directions to form the entrance of the building in the shape of a moon bridge, with each block presenting the shape of “small at the bottom and large at the top”, a highly sculptural complex.
The 18,000 square meters of Alucobond® louvered pages are composed of lines that blend with the exterior stone, just like the beauty of lines in calligraphy. The Alucobond® louvered pages may be straight and ironed, or formed into smooth arcs with slight step differences.
Zong Baihua, in , says: “Unlike Egyptian and Greek architecture, which is a mass of shapes, Chinese architecture is not. Ancient Chinese artists wanted to break this clump, to make it both virtual and real, to make it uncluttered.” Using a louvered aluminum laminate made of Alucobond® as a brush, the designer wields his brush on the marble canvas like calligraphy washed out of lead, with only a trace of black lines wandering across the white paper.
The beauty of the vivid and flowing lines forms the classical “Jiangnan Arch Bridge”, which stands under the dome of the Cultural Plaza and looks out from the “Moon Gate” to the tall buildings in Changzhou’s Xinbei District. The combination of ancient and modern inevitably gives rise to sighs of regret.
In , Liang Heng praised that “lines, an illusory and endless beauty, can hold any of our ideals, emotions and aesthetics. The excellent quality of Alucobond® makes such a large volume of hundred pages free of defects, even under the most exacting standards. The high flatness of Alucobond® and the precision of the finishing process made this difficult design possible.
The six buildings are distributed as a whole: the library, the art museum, the culture industry city, the hotel, and two financial service buildings, forming the layout of the business plaza in the south and the cultural plaza in the north. Designed by GMP Architects in collaboration with Zhusen Architecture, the 17.69-hectare building’s exterior is made up entirely of stone, glass, and Alucobond® metallic silver aluminum composite panels.
The lines, which can be both flowing and flowing at one go and also have the beauty of the curves, create a sculptural sense of majestic lines, revealing the ingenuity of the design in its simplicity.
