A Cloud Computing Center from the Future
A squarely shaped building in metallic dark gray, with densely distributed holes on the exterior walls: it gives the impression of a gigantic computer case with ventilation holes. Such is the appearance of the cloud computing center of China Telecom on the outskirts of Beijing.
The exterior walls of the cloud computing center utilizes ALUCOBOND® PLUS composite panels, a material developed for buildings with stringent fire resistance requirements, thus securing safety of both the in-house servers as well as the external building structure.
Take a closer look at the connected panels, the design reveals itself as a linear representation of the traditional Chinese eaves tiles. Every ALUCOBOND® panel that is folded inward has its edge section perforated as the exterior wall, which is a functional design for drainage rather than a hidden aesthetic appeal.
Through spotless glass windows, it is clear to see that no extra reinforcement is applied behind the perforated exterior walls. That is to say, the ALUCOBOND® panels are able to effectively maintain its rigidity and stability, yet still deliver a flat appearance in spite of nearly 50% perforation in its design.
The cloud computing center has been submitted for the Luban Prize 2016, the highest honor of quality in the construction sector in China. The prize has not only established a strict review and selection process, but also set the highest standards for project submission, as only projects whose quality is at the top of its category and which receive recommendation from the province or a ministry could be considered.
